The Maoz Tzur melody נוצר על ידי meirk
I heard that the widespread Maoz Tzur melody was a Frederick's (red-beard) march. He was a bad ruler toward the Jews. The Jews set this melody to Maoz tzur, and "deche admon" in the last stanza, refers to him.
Is this true?

The musicologists claim that Ma'oz Tzur (in the common tune) is based on three melodies.
The first part is based on a German song (meaning I know what makes me happy), the second on a German war song (called Beutenhaur), and the last part is based on another song (called Schallmann Leid). It seems that the melody is about 500 years old.

There is a different melody, which was used in FFAM and is also known to be sung by the Oruch Laner. I'll be happy to send it by email, please request it from This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
