When the Chazzan says "Gadlu LaShem Iti", my father instructed me, to lift the Sefer Torah a little and then place it again on my shoulder. What is the reason for this?

Where does this minhog comes from? Secondly, is it the minhog for the k'hal to bow at the same time?

Bowing down in the direction of the Sefer Torah is done only at Hagboho, when one sees the writing. See this topic .
