Position of the Rav's Seat in Shul

In many many shuls if not most, the Rav and officers seat facing the Kehila. Why is that and is it correct. It would seem these individuals should be facing the aron like everyone else.
What is minhag Ahskenaz in this regard?

The Rambam mentions that the zekeinim sit facing the people. I believe this is to help the congregation maintain the אימה required for davening.
