I know my father would remind me that if I didn't "Omer" I wouldn't receive [Kasekuchen] cheesecake on Shavuous. Is that just a family minhog or is it more widespread.

It was very widespread, that whoever counted all of the Omer got a special cheesecake. It may not have been an ancient Minhag, but it was very common.
